Since 1865, the Langham Hotels have welcomed discerning guests with its five-star hospitality. More than 160 years after The Langham London first opened its doors, you’ll find Langham Hotels in world-class cities such as New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney and Melbourne.
From the moment I set foot at The Langham Melbourne, I knew I was in for a sophisticated, yet unpretentious, stay. In the lobby, there was one of the largest chandeliers (made with Waterford crystal) in the Southern Hemisphere. My eyes were drawn to the inlaid marble tile floor and an oversized floral arrangement before feasting on the grand circular staircase leading up to the reception desk. And that sweet scent wafting through the air? I learned from the concierge that it’s The Langham’s signature Ginger Flower fragrance, created by Melbourne-based Air Aroma for Langham Hotels worldwide. (And yes, the hotel’s gift shop stocks scented products for guests to bring The Langham home with them.)
STREET CRED: IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCATION
Facing the Yarra River that bisects the city, The Langham Melbourne‘s location on the Southbank Promenade provides easy access to shopping, restaurants and bars. The Royal Botanic Gardens, National Gallery of Victoria and Koorie Heritage Trust (a fabulous Aboriginal art museum) are all within walking distance. If I wanted more shopping and dining options, I simply crossed the footbridge to the north bank of the river. From there, I could hop on a tram (free within the city center) to explore further afield.
WHO HANGS HERE: IS THIS HOTEL FOR YOU?
The Langham Melbourne attracts travelers with somewhat deep pockets looking for a five-star stay. With prices averaging AUD250 per night midweek during low season to AUD350+ during high season (and higher during special events and holidays), it isn’t a cheap date.
If you’re traveling with fur babies (cats and dogs under 20 kg /44 lb), you’ll love the Pampered Pets Staycation, a package that includes breakfast in bed, Langham-branded pet bedding and bowls, a private pet dining menu and a supplements and treats pack. The hotel even offers a Pooches and Pinot Wine Tour, where you can visit the vineyards of the Yarra Valley with your pampered pup in tow. Although I didn’t see any guests with pets during my stay, it is evident from the hotel’s website they frequent here.
THE STRAIGHT GOODS: WHAT’S IN THE ROOM?
The property’s 388 rooms and suites all feature king or twin beds, a flat-screen TV, a writing desk, a lounge chair, a minibar, robes and slippers, coffee and tea, and a marble bath with a separate shower and tub.
Rooms are at least 344 square feet, with city or river views. My Executive River Room overlooked the Yarra River and the city on the north bank, including the iconic red-bricked Flinders Street train station. A collection of river-facing rooms are designated as Club Rooms, with access to The Langham Club lounge on the 24th floor that serves afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapés. As a Club Room guest, I enjoyed private check-in at the Club Lounge and complimentary breakfast at the Melba Restaurant.
The star of The Langham Melbourne, though, is The Residence by Kerrie Hess, a 1,442 square-foot two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment styled by the Brisbane-based artist/fashion illustrator. Decorated in pink hues and adorned with her artwork, the suite is the ultimate splurge for a special occasion.
GOOD EATS: COCKTAILS AND CUISINE
The breakfast buffet in Melba Restaurant was the largest spread I have seen in a hotel restaurant, with a huge selection of hot and cold items, fresh fruit and baked goods, and various ethnic dishes, such as Indian, Chinese and Japanese. The restaurant also serves an elaborate lunch and dinner buffet, with an international menu boasting more than 40 items.
The elegant Aria Bar and Lounge serves coffees, cocktails and all-day meals, but it’s the place to be for The Langham Afternoon Tea, served daily in three sittings. Families can indulge in Fantasy Afternoon Tea, which serves items specifically designed for kids. Themed afternoon teas are often scheduled for celebratory occasions such as Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas and more.
BRAGGING RIGHTS: WHAT ELSE HAS IT GOT?
Located on the 9th floor overlooking the Yarra River and downtown Melbourne, the sun terrace was my favorite spot to relax. The 50-foot-long swimming pool has a glass roof overhead and the adjacent oversized whirlpool looks out to the gorgeous views. Guests can work out in the fully-equipped fitness studio, which also has city views. Although I didn’t have time to indulge, the Asian-inspired Chuan Spa has an extensive menu for facials, massages, wraps and scrubs, as well as hand and foot therapies.
A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS: WHAT STOOD OUT?
The view from various parts of The Langham Melbourne was definitely a highlight of my stay. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of my room, the Langham Club and the sun terrace, Melbourne gleamed in the sun and sparkled at night. It’s something I would never tire of.
My other favorite spot was The Langham Club Lounge, a peaceful oasis after a day of sightseeing. The light afternoon tea served there was also delightful, with finger sandwiches, scones and cream, and bite-sized pastries that hit the spot.
PARTING SHOT: IF WE COULD CHANGE ONE THING
Despite a fabulous location and stellar service, the rooms could use a refresh. The style and condition of the décor showed their age. The hotel was built in 1992 and joined The Langham family in 2005. I was disappointed not to find any USB plugs in the room, and the electrical outlets were located very low to the ground or too close to the edge of the countertops, which made it very difficult or impossible to plug adaptors.
