There’s plenty to entice visitors to Vienna — a world class opera house, fine art, castles and mouth-watering cakes and pastries, to name just a few. And come they do — especially in spring and summer when the weather is generally good for strolling through castle gardens, enjoying the view from atop the Stephansdom or the Ferris wheel in Prater Park, or hunting down the best slice of Sacher Torte. The Austrian capital is one of Europe’s 10 most-visited cities.

After a long day of sightseeing, there is nothing better than being able to retreat from the bustling city streets and lineups to get into everywhere from art galleries to museums and cafes, in a quiet oasis and unpack the day over a cocktail or glass of wine.

Few would guess from its exterior that Hotel Indigo Vienna – Naschmarkt, an IHG boutique hotel located in the low-key Margareten district, kitty-corner to the Pilgramgasse U-Bahn station, is such an oasis. Entering through a tunnel beneath its façade of sculpted bronze metal, guests find themselves in a calm space of garden terraces, including a rooftop one, and a reception area and lobby bar decorated with nature’s palette.

Guest familiar with the Indigo brand will be able to pick out a neighborhood theme running through the property. Here, a onetime car park, has been transformed into public spaces and guestrooms that reflect the secret gardens and hidden green spaces of the Margareten district. Geometric and intricate patterns in the floor tiles and carpet and touches of gold in fixtures throughout the hotel are a nod to Otto Wagner, a key member of Austria’s Secessionist movement and the architect of Vienna’s U-Bahn stations and nearby buildings such as the Majolikahaus at 40 Linke Wienzeile near the Naschmarkt.

Informal clusters of mid-century modern chairs upholstered in muted shades of turquoise, burgundy, moss and rose, reminiscent of a cozy living room invite guests to sit and sip a glass of wine — perhaps an Austrian Blaufrankish or Gruner Veltliner — and enjoy one of the small plates such as flammkuchen (a tasty flatbread much like thin crust pizza).

If the weather is good guests can head out to the terrace next to the lobby and sit back and enjoy the last of the day’s sun. The staff are friendly and attentive, but not intrusive.

In addition to the lobby bar, Hotel Indigo Vienna serves breakfast and dinner in Pigment, located on the lower level next to the outdoor courtyard. The menu here reflects the world cuisines that attract diners to the food stalls of the nearby Naschmarkt.

While guests can book a room with a balcony and enjoy cocktails overlooking the sun-splashed courtyard, Hotel Indigo Vienna — Naschmarkt’s 158 guestrooms carry the lush garden theme indoors with wallpaper featuring birds of paradise and tropical birds, and mid-century modern furniture in hues of soft pink and green. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi, a small workout area, on-site parking and accessibility features in rooms and public areas.

Despite being a quiet retreat, the heart of the city, the state opera and Stephansdom are just a 15-minute U-Bahn trip away, while the museum quarter and Schloss Schöenbrunn (the summer palace of the Hapsburgs) are a 20-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms with a balcony start around 315 euros in summer but can be as low as 160 euros in the off-season.
